A Matter of Interpretation
In spite of the advance of English as the
working language of business, companies still need to
converse in the local languages of their customers. And with
the opening of consumer markets in regions such as China,
India, and Eastern Europe, the shopping list of languages
that businesses need is lengthening all the time. But can
managers who use interpreters be sure that what their
audience hears is what they really intended to say?

ATA Cautions White House on
Future Language Policy
ATA issued a pointed response to the Obama administration's
call for "automatic, highly accurate and real-time
translation between the major languages of the world." In a
letter dated October 2nd, ATA President Jiri Stejskal urged
the administration to “take a long-term approach to language
security by investing in human skills and promoting greater
awareness of and expertise in foreign languages."
